Graduate students from Dakota Wesleyan University visit NCIC for three days to learn about cultural integration and diversity in education

A group of graduate students from Dakota Wesleyan University will be visiting Adult Basic Education classes this Tuesday, May 11th through may 13th.  The eleven students are all part of a human relations class led by Professor Gloria Leonard and most are pursuing either a Master’s degree or an administrative licensure.  Their majors range from English and Spanish to Biology and Physical Education.

The trip is meant to give students an opportunity to experience and learn about diversity in an educational setting.

Although this is the fourth group from Dakota Wesleyan to visit, it is the first time graduate students have been involved.

The students will be working with the morning Collaborative English, Employment Readiness, and Citizenship classes.  They will work in groups with the Adult Basic Education students on cultural exchange topics.

Professional Development Trainings on August 17

NCIC was thrilled to have Dr. Bonnie Davis and Mary Kim Schreck, Educational Consultants from Educating for Change speak to area educators on Tuesday, August 17 at Minnesota West.  Dr. Davis' presentation was entitled "How to Teach Students Who Don't Look Like You".  Mary Kim Schreck presented "You've Got to Reach Them to Teach Them". Over 300 educators from five area school districts heard the morning keynote addresses.  Each of the presenters also led afternoon workshops for Worthington faculty at Prairie Elementary.

"We were pleased to have both Bonnie Davis and Mary Kim Schreck present here," said NCIC Coordinator Sharon Johnson.  "They both shared practical strategies that can be implemented in classrooms right away this fall."

Local youth present a Quinceañera demonstration at the Spring Fling for Senior Citizens on May 13, 2010

A group of 10 young people prepared and presented a workshop at the Spring Fling for Senior Citizens.  The students with guidance from adviser, Nancy Landeros, choreographed a dance to perform and a slideshow with photos from their own Quinceañera celebrations.  Students also answered questions from attendees. We appreciate the opportunity to participate in an intergenerational, intercultural learning experience.  Special thanks to Nancy Landeros, Myra Pinales, Brenda Rodriguez, Estefany Castillo, Leah Perez, Gracia Maldonado, Micheal Garcia, Jorge Duron, Jose Soto, Roberto Ayala and Joel Mendoza.

Color Project at Brewster Elementary School

Dynamic 507 did the Color Project for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 18, 2010 at Brewster Elementary School. The day consisted of students learning about the importance of skin color and not to judge others by how they look or who they are, but by the content of their character. The students were then able to match their skin color with different paints and do a self-portrait.

Housing Careers Camp involves 34 high school students

NCIC awarded a mini-grant to SW MN Housing Partnership and Emerging Markets to provide a 3-day Housing Careers Camp.  The camp took place on June 7-9.  Students learned about careers in the housing field like surveying, landscaping, and banking.  They also learned about college entrance requirements and toured Minnesota West in Worthington and Minnesota State in Mankato.  Carol Goodeman coordinated the program and 34 youth from four area high schools participated.

Elementary Spanish

For the last five years students in Brewster/Round Lake, Fulda and Worthington have received Spanish language instruction and multi-cultural education from licensed elementary teachers.  This Elementary Spanish program sponsored by NCIC is an exploratory program in which students have one or two lessons per week throughout the school year. Research shows that younger children are able to learn additional languages more quickly, so this program capitalizes on children’s natural ability to learn languages at an early age.

English - Spanish Interchange

Adults who wish to learn either Spanish or English may take advantage of this unique program. Individuals who wish to learn Spanish attend the first hour of the class to study the Spanish language, then they participate in a 30-minute interchange time with native Spanish speakers who are in the process of learning English. Following the interchange time, the Spanish- speaking students remain for an English lesson. Childcare and transportation are available.
