English 10A & 10B – Course Overview
English 10A and English 10B are quarter-long courses designed to help students strengthen their reading, writing, and communication skills through thematic units that explore the power of language, identity, and storytelling. Using the StudySync curriculum, students will engage with a diverse range of literary and nonfiction texts, analyzing how writers express ideas, shape culture, and reflect human experiences. Through discussion, research, and writing, students will develop their ability to think critically and communicate effectively.
English 10A – First Quarter
The first half of the semester focuses on communication, resilience, and the role of memory in shaping identity:
- The Power of Communication – This unit examines how language influences individuals and society, exploring the ways in which words inspire, persuade, and create change.
- Moving Forward – Focusing on perseverance and progress, students will explore stories of personal and societal challenges, analyzing how individuals adapt, grow, and overcome obstacles.
- The Persistence of Memories – This unit highlights the ways in which memory shapes identity, personal history, and collective understanding of the past.
English 10B – Second Quarter
The second half of the semester explores themes of relationships, culture, and storytelling:
- The Ties That Bind – This unit examines the connections that shape people’s lives, from family and friendships to community and cultural traditions.
- Chopped, Stirred, and Blended – Through the lens of food and tradition, this unit explores how culture, heritage, and personal identity are preserved and shared across generations.
- Origin Stories – This unit focuses on myths, legends, and personal narratives, exploring how storytelling helps define identities and shape worldviews.
Throughout English 10A and 10B, students will engage in analytical and creative writing, discussions, and collaborative projects.
