English 9A & 9B – Course Overview

Welcome to English 9A and English 9B, the foundational Communication Arts courses for ISD 518. Throughout each quarter, students will engage in reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking as they explore a diverse range of literary works and themes using the StudySync curriculum.

English 9A

During this quarter, students will delve into three thematic units:

  • Divided We Fall – Examining stories of conflict and unity, students will explore how divisions in society impact individuals and communities. Through literature and nonfiction texts, they will analyze the forces that both separate and bring people together.
  • The Call to Adventure – This unit focuses on the hero’s journey, guiding students through classic and contemporary tales of adventure and self-discovery. They will investigate how challenges shape personal growth and resilience.
  • Declaring Your Genius – Students will consider what it means to be a genius and how creativity, innovation, and determination shape history. Through the study of influential figures and literary works, they will reflect on their own potential and unique talents.

English 9B

During this quarter, students will continue to build their analytical and writing skills through three new thematic units:

  • The Art of Disguise – This unit explores themes of identity, deception, and transformation in literature. Students will analyze how characters use disguise—both literal and figurative—to navigate their worlds.
  • The Dance of Romance – Focusing on relationships and the complexities of love, this unit examines romantic themes across various texts, considering how cultural and historical contexts shape our understanding of romance.
  • Human Potential – Students will reflect on the power of perseverance, ambition, and self-discovery. Through literature and real-world examples, they will explore the question: What are the limits of human potential?

Throughout both courses, students will engage in a variety of reading and writing activities, including literary analysis, narrative writing, and argumentation. They will also participate in discussions and projects that challenge them to think critically and express their ideas effectively.

English 9A and 9B provide a strong foundation for high school Communication Arts, preparing students for future coursework and helping them develop the skills needed for success in both academic and real-world settings.
